Preparing for Your Flight Training Program
For the CFI Program
VFR Navigation
It is not uncommon for instrument rated applicants arrive to CFI training having not flown or reviewed VFR flight planning since receiving their instrument rating.
The initial CFI checkride is a VFR checkride. You will be required to teach VFR flight planning and navigation to your initial CFI examiner or inspector.
Download the latest copy of the PTS from the FAA.
Common problems during training and checkrides are:
- Inadequate knowledge of VFR chart symbols
- Lack of proficiency using E6B or flight computer
- Lack of proficiency using a plotter
- Inability to accurately complete a VFR NAV log

Chapter 15 of the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25A) is one of the best resources for navigation information including, aeronautical charts, flight computers, and a step-by-step set of instructions for completing a Navigation Log.
