VFR Navigation

It is not uncommon for instrument rated applicants arrive to CFI training having not flown or reviewed VFR flight planning since receiving their instrument rating.

The initial CFI checkride is a VFR checkride. You will be required to teach VFR flight planning and navigation to your initial CFI examiner or inspector.

Chapter 15 of the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge (FAA-H-8083-25A) is one of the best resources for navigation information including, aeronautical charts, flight computers, and a step-by-step set of instructions for completing a Navigation Log. Your examiner or FAA inspector will expect you to teach using this resource.
