College Degree Coursework & Flight Training
Nearly all of the associate or bachelor’s degrees’ coursework is available to you in a convenient, individualized online format. The college degree coursework can also be completed in the classroom at the Beckley, W.Va., campus or through independent study. All your flight training is accomplished at your ATP Flight Training Center. At the end of your degree program, you will take a capstone business course online or at MSU’s Orlando campus.
Course Descriptions
• METR 101 – Introduction to Meteorology
Overview of the structure and composition of the atmosphere, atmospheric processes and the energy that drives them, and weather phenomena and prediction.
• GEOG 201 – Geography of North America
The natural environment, resources, and cultural patterns of the major economic and geographic regions of North America.
• AVIA 120 – Private Pilot Theory
In this course, students develop the knowledge needed to safely exercise the privileges and responsibilities of a Private Pilot Certificate. Topics of study include aerodynamics, aircraft systems, FAA regulations, U.S. Airspace System, weight and balance, aircraft performance, aviation weather, flight publications, cross-country planning and navigation, basic flight physiology, and flight safety.
AVIA 121 – Private Pilot Flight – Phase I
Flight training in this course develops the skills to operate a single engine aircraft in solo flight. Training includes maneuvers and procedures for pre-solo flight training in a single-engine airplane.

• CIS 115 – Fundamentals of Computer Applications
Provides an overview of microcomputer applications including a brief introduction to computer concepts, Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Powerpoint.
AVIA 122 – Private Pilot Flight – Phase II
This flight training course includes training in the maneuvers and procedures to meet the FAA aeronautical experience requirements for the Private Pilot Certificate with an Airplane Single Engine Land Rating.

AVIA 123 – Introduction to Instrument Flight Training
This course is designed to increase single engine flight proficiency and prepare students for instrument training by providing an introduction to basic attitude instrument flying and instrument cross-country flight.

• AVIA 220 – Multi-Engine Theory
This course develops the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and proficiently exercise the privileges and responsibilities of a Private Pilot certificate with a multi-engine rating. Course study includes multi-engine aircraft systems, multi-engine aerodynamics, weight and balance, aircraft performance, and abnormal/emergency procedures.
AVIA 221 – Multi-Engine Flight Training
Students receive the flight training to add a multi engine class rating to their Private Pilot certificate. Training transitions the student to more complex, higher performance aircraft and includes single engine operation, aircraft system operation, fuel management, safety awareness, crew resource management (CRM) and aeronautical decision making.

• ENGL 101 – English Composition I
Prerequisite: C or better in ENGL 100, ACT score of 17 or higher, or test placement. Explores expository writing as a process. Students work through a series of papers with different goals, emphasizing focus, invention, organization, development, grammar, and style
• PHIL 190 – Ethics
Survey of ethics and social issues with a theoretical base that considers important thinkers from the history of ethics, including Plato, Aristotle, Aquinas, and Kant. Includes discussion and assignments based on relevant case studies. Students consider their ethical positions on various issues, gaining a better understanding of their background and the possibilities around their own ethical horizons.
• AVIA 222 – Instrument Rating Theory
This course develops the aeronautical knowledge required for the addition of an instrument rating to the student’s Private Pilot certificate. Course work includes instrument flight regulations, air traffic control system and procedures, instrument navigation and approaches, instrument navigation charts, aviation weather, safety, aeronautical decision making, and crew resource management (CRM).
AVIA 223 – Scenario Based Simulator Training
This course will enable the student to develop critical thinking, risk management, and decision-making skills during a series of realistic, multi-engine simulator training lessons. The student will take an active role by participating in training scenarios that will prepare them for the rigors of real-world multi-engine instrument flying.

• COMM 203 – Intro to Human Communication
A study of the basic principles and concepts involved in the human communication process. Addresses principles and theory of verbal, nonverbal, intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, mediated, and intercultural communication modalities. Includes practical development of meaning generated by the audience and the barriers to effective communication, including noise, verbal connotation, stereotypes, groupthink, and intercultural differences.
• AVIA 224 – Resource Management and Professionalism
Students will explore the human factors that affect the efficiency and safety of flight. Coursework emphasizes airline cockpit crew coordination, situational awareness, communication, workload management, decision-making, and human error management essential to the professional crew environment. In addition, Single Pilot Resource Management (SRM) training helps the pilot develop and maintain situational awareness by learning to manage automation and associated aircraft control and navigation tasks. This enables the pilot to accurately assess and manage risk and make accurate and timely decisions.
AVIA 225 – Multi-Engine Instrument Flight Training - Phase I
This course provides additional aeronautical experience toward the instrument rating in a multi-engine airplane.

This course provides the additional aeronautical experience necessary to complete the instrument rating. Training conducted in multi-engine aircraft and the student will earn instrument privileges for both single- and multi-engine aircraft.

AVIA 227 – Crew cross-country Flight Training - Phase I
Students will expand their aeronautical experience to include airline style nation wide cross-country flights. Flights will be conducted using FAA-standard cockpit resource management and crew-concept techniques. Flights are operated in a FAR 121 airline style environment. All scheduled flights are conducted with flight releases to assist with weather, routing, and aircraft performance reviews.

• ENGL 102 – English Composition II
Prerequisite: C or better in ENGL 101, ACT score of 23 or higher, or test placement. continuation of ENGL 101, emphasizing style, the study and practice of argument, and development and use of formal research skills.
• AVIA 232 – Commercial Multi-Engine Theory
Students will develop the aeronautical knowledge required for the Commercial Pilot Certificate with Multi-Engine Land rating. Topics of study include regulations, aerodynamics, meteorology, aircraft performance, aircraft limitations, pilotage, dead reckoning, navigation aids, aeronautical decision making, aircraft systems, night and high altitude operations, commercial maneuvers and aircraft procedures.
AVIA 233 – Commercial Multi-Engine Flight Training
This flight training course provides the remaining aeronautical experience to obtain the Commercial Pilot Certificate with Multi-Engine Land and Instrument Rating.

AVIA 231 – Commercial Single-Engine Flight Training
This course includes the flight training required to add the Single Engine Class rating to the student’s existing Commercial Pilot Certificate.

• AVIA 332 – Multi-Engine Flight Instructor Theory
This course begins with of a thorough review of the knowledge required to exercise the privileges and responsibilities of a Commercial Pilot Certificate with Multi-Engine rating. Students then participate in a detailed study of the responsibilities and teaching concerns of a flight instructor including fundamentals of teaching and learning, effective teaching methods, learning process, consideration of flight training syllabi, effective evaluations, and flight instructor responsibilities.
• AVIA 322 – Instrument Flight Instructor Theory
This course provides an in-depth review of the knowledge required for the Instrument rating combined with a thorough study of the responsibilities and techniques to be used as an Instrument Flight Instructor.
• AVIA 312 – Single-Engine Flight Instructor Theory
This course provides an understanding of the fundamentals of teaching in a single-engine airplane.
AVIA 333 – Multi-Engine Flight Instructor Flight Training
Students will receive flight training in the maneuvers and procedures required for their initial Flight Instructor certificate in a Multi-Engine aircraft.
The CFI training in AVIA 333 will require approximately 14 consecutive days at a CFI Training Center. You will be responsible for air travel, local ground transportation, and housing. Due to special training requirements and FAA pilot examiner availability, CFI training is only offered at select locations.

AVIA 340 – Citation SIC Type Rating
This course includes the flight training required for a Citation SIC type rating. Training emphasizes real-world jet operations including basic jet systems, pressurization, cockpit automation, descent planning, weather, and high altitude physiology. Includes high altitude and high performance endorsements.

• MATH 102 – Beginning Algebra
Prerequisite: C or better in MATH 100, or placement. Introduces algebra as a natural extension of arithmetic. As each algebraic topic is introduced, its relationship to arithmetic or to a previous algebraic topic is shown. Exponents, basic geometry, and measurements are also introduced.
• AVIA 352 – Advanced Aircraft Systems Theory
This course includes an in-depth study of Regional Jet systems common to both Bombardier and Embraer Regional Jets, FMS navigation, airline-level Crew Resource Management and airline standard operating procedures. The topics covered use the CRJ-200 as a base aircraft, but are presented in a manner that allows for the primary principles to apply to many regional jet aircraft and some turbo prop aircraft.
AVIA 353 – Regional Jet Standards Certification
This course includes flight training in a CRJ-200 FTD and CPT to apply and perfect the ground school knowledge presented in AVIA 352. This course uses highly-specialized simulators (flight training devices) available in Dallas, TX; Jacksonville Beach, FL; and Phoenix, AZ. Many affordable housing options are available.

• LGLS 298 – Business Law
An introduction to the legal and ethical environment of business, with an emphasis on negotiable instruments, secured transactions, bankruptcy, and agency.
• AVIA 486 – Aviation Marketing and Management II
Explores methods used by different elements in aviation: suppliers, service providers, and manufacturers. Focuses on marketing plans and research, communication in the selling and promotion process, and sales management. Guest speakers from different areas of aviation present their marketing strategies. This course is offered online or at MSU’s Orlando campus.
